Holden lies north of Worcester on higher, more wooded ground, with many homes on larger lots and some on private wells and septic systems. Hilly lots bring their own water problem: runoff from higher ground flows toward the house, and a home cut into a slope can have water pressing against the uphill wall every time it rains.
The fix often starts outside, with regrading so the ground slopes away from the house, a curtain drain uphill to intercept water before it reaches the foundation, or longer downspout extensions. Interior drainage handles what still makes it through. If your home has a well or septic system, tell the contractor before they dig, since drain lines and discharge points need to stay clear of both. Walk the yard with them after a storm if you can, and show them where water runs and collects.
